School is in session. Summer has really come to an end and it’s time to get in work mode – for real this time. Maybe you’re a college student and school work is starting to pile up. Maybe you’re a grad student balancing new classes, internships, and a part-time job. You may be reading this and you’re just happy the weekend is here because your work week was dreadful after the long labor day weekend. In whichever category you fall, a new season is on its way and, if you’ve ever been there, you know it sucks when you start realizing you have no clothes in your wardrobe.
We’ve all experienced the everyday struggle of having “nothing to wear”. This semester, I headed back to school thinking I’d built up a wardrobe over the summer… LIES. Keeping up with trends is hardddd. It can be a full-time job. Though it may seem like a complicated project, when you’re in a space where you’re building up your wardrobe, the answer is simple… BE BASIC.
Now, I know it may seem weird to tell someone to be basic when it comes to dressing, but I just mean focus on buying the basics; get the fundamentals. I’m not sure about you, but the problem with my closet tends to be a bit complex. I’ll look in my closet and clearly see clothes, but everyday… nothing to wear. When I shop, I always either purchase trendy pieces or some special occasion outfit. Everyone needs the trendy pieces, but, when you’re building your wardrobe, having a closet full of these types of pieces leads to little room for variation in your outfits. Look at it this way: If I have a plain black top, it’s easier for me to get away with wearing that top Monday – Friday (not saying you should try it, but you know… lol) than it is to get away with wearing a trendy piece multiple times.

Also, know that stocking up on basics doesn’t make you “basic”. Basics aren’t necessarily boring. Building your wardrobe with basics doesn’t mean your outfits have to be dry or repetitive, especially when it comes to fall wardrobe. The key to dressing in the cooler seasons is layering your pieces. Then, your trendy pieces can be added for special effect, extra slayage, you know… When all of your pieces are trendy, you have nothing to layer. Don’t let those red carpet looks fool you. If you think about it, most of the celebs we love build their every day fashions off of basic, fundamental pieces.

This “building your wardrobe” process can take a while, but trust me. You’ll be so satisfied when the cooler weather starts kicking in and it doesn’t take you 5 hours to find something to wear.
Good luck stocking your closet and wish me (and my coins-lol) luck as I continue to stock mine!
Stay Beautiful.
XO,
Sydney
