Throwback Thursday, Everyday: 90’s Fashion is Still the Trend

The 90’s fashion vibe is back, with bright colors, oversized lapels, box braids, and natural beauty looks galore, and it’s creepin’ in with a little more TLC. Not only is this trend showing us some tender love and care, but it’s taking us back to the good ol’ days of the 90’s, reminding us of our favorite 90’s celebs.

Fashion in the 90’s was effortless and edgy. Designers of New York Fashion Week are taking this effortless edge and adding a dash of that 90’s fashion vibe to their collections. These new looks have a twist, but, from the cross walk to the runway, 90’s fashion is unmistakable.

Designers showcased their collections during New York Fashion Week, clearly being inspired by the 90’s decade. LaQuan Smith showcased his Spring/Summer 18 collection that was inspired by our favorite 90’s school movies — you know — Clueless, School Daze, and Bring It On.

Other designer collections, like Alexander Wang and Tom Ford, presented their collection with looks that may not have been 90’s inspired head-to-toe, but they definitely included 90’s inspired pieces. Wang’s deconstructed “tied around the waist without being tied around the waist” pieces give that effortless meets grunge 90’s look.

Ford’s collection incorporated shoulder pads, high cut body suits paired with low-waisted pants, and bright colored bomber jackets. The 90’s trend, in women’s fashion, gives the relaxed and oversized look without neglecting sex appeal.

Street fashion also mirrors the trend that is hitting the runways by storm. Fashion in the streets is looking more and more like the 90’s as the style continues to progress. Pixie cuts, slip dresses, box, track pants and so many more trendy looks from the 90’s are popular street fashion looks. Even our favorite celebs are rocking them. Actress, Zoe Kravitz (pictured below) effortlessly rocks her platinum pixie cut. Model, Chanel Iman always looks great in a slip dress and she’s been rocking a few lately. Then, there’s the classic box braids hairstyle that has been making a comeback. Jhene Aiko rocks some in the picture below. Lastly, Rihanna is always giving us life when it comes to fashion and her sense of style. She’s giving 90’s fashion vibes in her cropped baseball tee-like top and track pants.

90s Looks

We’re obviously recycling older trends by bringing the 90’s look back, but that’s what fashion does and there’s no denying the influence Hip Hop has had on culture and fashion. A lot of this influence emerged in the 90’s decade. Groups from the 90’s like TLC put together infamous looks that started trends and took over the fashion styles of the decade.

Most of the looks that were popular in the 90’s have other historic origins. For example, Janet Jackson made Poetic Justice Braids a look in the classic movie Poetic Justice. Box braids, however, date back to early Egypt. In parts of Africa, they were symbols of their social status and their village. Shoulder pads have been around since 1877. Early shoulder pads were used for sports. They migrated into fashion in the 1930s, when women were showing off their place in the workforce and helping their country. Kurt Cobain, an American musician was known for his grungy tied around the waist look, especially with his flannel shirts.

The trend is back and it’s here to stay – at least for a while. The look of the 90’s was as so effortless and that is what’s in right now. I’m a fan. It’s so refreshing to be able to combine sex appeal with that relaxed look. With this vibe, you don’t have to try so hard to be trendy; it’s effortless. I’ve definitely been trying to add more 90’s inspired pieces to my wardrobe. Are you into 90’s fashion? Do you think it’s back and here to stay? I hope so because I’m a fan.

XO,

Sydney
